ERS presents the first version of ARGUENDO, a performance based on a Supreme Court oral argument transcript.

Work-in-progress showings will give audiences a first look at this new, unique ERS performance. Post-show discussions follow each of the performances and will be led by director John Collins, who will be joined on May 17th by special guests Jeffrey Toobin (The New Yorker, CNN) and Emily Bazelon (Slate.com) and on May 18th by Nicholas Quinn Rosenkranz (Georgetown Law School).

In Arguendo, ERS turns its unique theatrical perspective on a 1991 First Amendment case. In Barnes v. Glen Theatre, a case brought by a group of naked go-go dancers, the justices debate whether erotic dancing is protected speech under the U.S. Constitution. Is dancing naked in a strip-club an exercise of artistic expression or a crime? ERS presents the justices and the advocates for the two sides as both great minds and average people, with both intellectual fire and light-hearted senses of humor. The conversation the emerges is in turns absurd, hilarious, provocative and intellectually compelling.

Arguendo is presented in collaboration with The Bushwick Starr. It was developed in part at New York Theatre Workshop and at Abrons Art Center.
